Under the direction of the Community Services Supervisor, the Transportation Specialist drives the City’s 5-passenger van and provides responsible, safe transport for senior citizens and the physically disabled. The position may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and other duties as assigned. Maximum of 950 hours per fiscal year.
Examples of Duties
The typical duties of this position include:Transport senior citizens and physically disabled to and from appointments;Assist passengers entering and exiting the vehicle;Keep daily records and logs attendance, mileage, and route information;Check-in and check-out vans properly, including the working condition before each shift;Check pick-up and drop-off list of participants on route and keep accurate records;Maintain a punctual schedule;Maintain vans, including weekly wash and motor pool inspection;Contact supervisor and motor pool when mechanical failures arise;Ensure all passengers are safely seat belted in and that safety precautions are adhered to at all times;Operate a computer and any applicable software;Answer phones and radios and work with the public, at all times, in a professional and courteous manner;Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and. Perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer.
Typical Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age;Must possess valid Class C California Driver’s License with passenger endorsement, a good driving record, and some bus/van driving experience;Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a First Aid/ CPR/ AED certification within 6 months of employment;Must have knowledge of Bus/ Van operation and effective safety precautions;Must have the significant physical abilities include reaching/handling, talking/hearing, near and far visual acuity; and. Testing Required: TB test clearance, criminal justice fingerprint clearance, and drug test clearance.

This position may require prolonged sitting, standing, walking on leveled or unleveled surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, pushing, pulling, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 25 pounds or more. This position also requires both near and far vision and acute hearing. Environmental Conditions. Work is performed indoors in an office environment as well as outdoors, and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions and temperatures. Selection Process.
